Community raise over $60k for Indian taxi driver killed in crash

Community has come forward to support the family of an innocent Indian taxi driver who died in an alleged hit and run tragedy in the Auckland CBD.

Police have arrested a 20-year-old man after charging him with drink-driving and other offences in relation to a smash that killed a 29-year-old Indian taxi driver at Symonds Street, Auckland on Saturday morning.

Abdul Raheem Fahad Syed died after a black Mercedes allegedly ran a red light and hit his Toyota Prius, badly damaging the driver's side.

Syed, who moved to Auckland in 2014 from Hyderabad in India, leaves behind a wife and 5-month-old son.

The local community has come forward to raise funds for the family of the deceased taxi driver.

In the last two days, a fund raising page Givealittle has collected more than $61,000 from approximately 1200 donations.

, said the money will go towards the transportation and required paperwork needed to send Syed's body back to India, as well as the airfare for his wife and son.

A fellow taxi driver  of his monthly Uber income to the family.

"I just heard the news on Saturday morning; I was shocked when I heard they have a five-month-old baby. I had to do something,” said Mr Singh.

It is reported that Syed was the sole source of income for his family.
