The handful of valiant Punjabi soldiers who not only fought but also won the Battle of Saragarhi of 1897 against thousands of Afghans, is a chapter of military history that makes not only the Sikh or Punjabi community but all people of Indian origin across the world proud. It tells the tale of resolve and collective valour in war, especially when the enemy outnumbers you by several multiples.
On March 21, a Hindi movie, titled Kesari, based on this legendary battle will be released. It features Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, who plays the role of Havildar Ishar Singh, the leader of the 36th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment of the British-Indian army, who lead his men to victory against the mighty Afghans.
