Indian owner injured in liquor store armed robbery

An elderly Indian man sustained a head injury during an armed robbery at a liquor store in Auckland, New Zealand on Monday night.

Narinder Singh, the owner of Quality Liquor Spot was hit on the head by one of the six robbers who entered the store around 9:30 pm. The elderly man required five stitches on his forehead as a result of the attack.

“My father was hit during the robbery with a hammer, and was given immediate medical assistance last night,” Gurjit Singh, son of the owner told .

“He is out of danger now and resting in the house,” Mr Singh added.

Six men clad in hoodie jackets armed with hammer, knives and machetes threatened the store owner and the staff.

“Some of the offenders went inside the chiller room and took alcohol bottles, while two of them jumped onto the counter and took the till along with the cash.

“Another offender grabbed cigarettes going inside the counter whereas one of the offenders armed with a hammer charged towards my father who was in the store along with a staff member,” Mr Singh said.

The offenders are estimated to have taken $600 and cigarettes worth $3,000 and a few bottles of alcohol.

 “The robbers were loud and fast, appeared to be teenagers. We had a baseball bat under the counter for our defence but did not use it,” Gorinder Singh, the staff who witnessed the robbery said.

The police is investigating the incident.
