The police in India have registered a criminal case against a woman currently studying in Australia as an international student and her family members for allegedly abetting the suicide of her father-in-law.

According to the police report, deceased Iqbal Singh paid Rs. 14.5 Lakh (nearly $29,000) for Parminder Kaur’s course fee and travel expenses to Australia after she cleared an English proficiency test to secure admission in a college in Australia, on the condition that she would marry his son, Manpreet Singh and take him to Australia on a spouse visa.

The police in Jagraon (Punjab) began investigations three months ago when Iqbal Singh filed a complaint, accusing Parminder Kaur and her family of not honouring the deal, the reported.

The police said Iqbal Singh claimed in his complaint that Parminder travelled to Australia without his son Manpreet and her family was not returning the money which he had borrowed from various friends and relatives.

The Station House Officer of the local police station, Inspector Inderjeet Singh said both the parties were given an opportunity to resolve the dispute.

According to police, Iqbal Singh ended his life on Thursday. The accused, Parminder Kaur, her parents and brother-in-law have been charged with sections pertaining to abetment of suicide by a person.

While a manhunt has been launched for the other accused, police said they are approaching the Australian authorities to get Parminder Kaur repatriated to India.

“We will also write to the Indian Embassy in Australia about the case against her,” Inspector Inderjeet Singh said.
