In yet another significant dole-out for the Indian community, the Liberal Party has pledged funding worth $100,000 to Khalsa Punjabi School in Melbourne, pending their re-election in federal elections later this week.

The announcement was made by Michael Sukkar, Federal Member of Deakin during a visit to the Sri Guru Nanak Satsang Sabha gurudwara in the eastern suburb of Blackburn on Sunday.

Welcoming the decision, Dilpreet Kaur Jaswal, the principal of the school told SBS Punjabi that the funding would provide a much-needed fillip for the school.

“We’ve recently opened a new campus in Hoppers Crossing and so we need resources. The community is growing and we are looking forward to utilizing the funds towards the construction of new classrooms, libraries and a new playing area for the students,” Ms Jaswal told SBS Punjabi.

Earlier in March, the school branched into a new campus at Hoppers Crossing gurudwara in Melbourne’s southwest and at present has a strength of over a hundred students studying at both its campuses.

“Increasing the size of our school will ensure we can cater for more students and support our objective of promoting cultural diversity in the local community”, Ms Jaswal added.

Khalsa Punjabi School was established in 1994 within the gurdwara premises in Blackburn with the motive to impart Punjabi language classes to children of the Sikh community, the first of its kind in Melbourne, according to the school’s website.
