Many Bollywood stars and other celebrities test positive for COVID-19

The latest amongst Indian celebrities to test positive to the coronavirus is almost the entire Bachchan family. Other popular figures like singer Kanika Kapoor and politician Jyotiraditya Scindia have recovered from the contagious disease and returned home from hospital.

Legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan tweeted on July 12 that he had caught the virus and was admitted to a Mumbai hospital.
The same day, his son Abhishek Bachchan also tweeted that he, along with his wife and actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and daughter Aaradhya were also found coronavirus positive.

His mother, actor-turned-parliamentarian Jaya Bachchan, remains safe so far.
Another popular Bollywood actor, Anupam Kher, also took to Twitter to announce that his mother, popular amongst his fans on his social media channel as ‘Dulari’, was found coronavirus positive, along with his actor brother Raju Kher, his wife and daughter.

Veteran Bollywood actor Kiran Kumar had also tested positive to the virus in mid-May and recovered by the end of the month.

India is being ranked as the country with the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world. However, the country's recovery rate, at a promising 62 per cent, is said to be the ray of light in the dark tunnel the world is currently passing through.

According to India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as on July 13, there were 301,609 active cases of coronavirus in the country, whereas 553,470 have been cured or discharged from hospital. Over 23,000 have lost their lives to this pandemic. 

Bollywood playback singer Kanika Kapoor was amongst the first filmdom celebrities of India to catch the coronavirus. Her illness became a big controversy as she was reported to have been attending big parties despite having symptoms of COVID-19 in March.

Cases of criminal negligence have been registered against her for not remaining in self-isolation despite knowing that she had coronavirus-like symptoms upon her return from London in March.

According to Indian media reports, Ms Kapoor tested positive half a dozen times despite being treated in hospital, before she was discharged in April. She finally tested negative to the coronavirus twice.

However, music composer Wajid Khan Wajid Khan of the hit due Sajid-Wajid was not as lucky. After testing positive to COVID-19, Mr Khan passed away following some complications.
Politician Jyotiraditya Scindia, who recently changed camp from the Congress to the BJP, and his mother Madhavi Raje Scindia also recovered from coronavirus in June.
Former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi, who was also down with the virus in June, posted a video on social media to share his journey about the pandemic affecting him. He tweeted in early July that he had recovered from the virus.

Residents in metropolitan Melbourne are subject to stay-at-home orders and can only leave home for food and essential supplies, work, study, exercise or care responsibilities. People are also advised to wear masks in public.
