The Indian general election is often called the festival of democracy when over 800 million voters, in the biggest democracy of the world, exercise their right to choose their government every five years.

The elections - currently underway in India - attract the attention of the media from across the globe, largely due to its colour and chaos.

The Indian election this time, however, is causing some concerns halfway across the world in Melbourne where police say they have been made aware of "growing tensions" in the Indian community of Victoria and has warned those with opposing views against resorting to violence.

"Police in the western suburbs are aware of growing tensions within the Victorian Indian community as a result of opposing views relating to the election currently taking place in India," the Victoria Police said in a statement.
"Police strongly discourage the use of violence and will not tolerate anyone who breaks the law or engages in behaviour that puts the safety of others at risk."

Victoria police has sought to reassure the community that it is well-equipped and prepared to deal with any "antisocial or violent behaviour".

"We all want a happy and harmonious society. Victoria Police remains committed to this ideal and we stand side-by-side with our community as part of achieving this."

The 2019 Indian general election is currently being held in seven phases from 11 April to 19 May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha.

The counting of votes will be conducted on 23 May, and on the same day the results will be declared.
