Amid increasing incidents of hate crime against the Sikh community, an organisation called the ‘Sikhs of New York’ made a world record by tying 9,000 turbans in a span of few hours at the landmark Times Square in New York.
The record was created on the annual ‘Turban Day’, one of many such events commemorated by Sikhs living in the US to mark Vaisakhi- a festival celebrated by millions of Sikhs across the globe. The main aim of the event was to educate other communities about the Sikh faith, especially the turban-an article of faith which has often been misconstrued and associated with terrorism in the recent years.

Chanpreet Singh was also quoted as saying, “These are core Sikh values and American values that make us Sikh Americans. Our diversity is our strength.”Tying turbans to an excited lot of locals and tourists, the organisation’s volunteers took the opportunity to inform the participants about the fifth largest religion in the world and spread awareness about the meaning and essence of wearing a turban in a Sikh’s life.
