A new campaign to promote Queensland as an investment and international study destination is targeting Indian entrepreneurs and will host two Indian innovators later this year to experience the state’s “global environment”.

Two state government agencies- Study Queensland and Advance Queensland have jointly launched the Indian Innovators Campaign that is inviting Indian innovators to work with the local companies and education providers.

“India has one of the fastest growing economies on the planet. It’s crucial that Queensland entrepreneurs form strong relationships with their Indian counterparts and that’s what this program is all about,” said Ministerial Champion for International Education, Kate Jones.

The aim of the initiative is to showcase Queensland as an innovation hub and the place for students to develop a global entrepreneurial mindset, and to ultimately inspire Indian start-ups to establish their operations in Queensland.

India is Queensland’s second biggest market, with the majority of the students from the South-Asian country studying in Higher Education or VET in Brisbane or the Gold Coast.

Under the campaign, two Indian innovators will be selected to travel to Queensland from 1 April to 7 April this year, and work with the leading local innovators and entrepreneurs. They will also have have a chance to run workshops and address stakeholders in Queensland and India. T

Study Queensland Executive Director Shannon Willoughby said the competition was open to two university graduate entrepreneurs or start-up founders aged between 21 and 40.

“This competition aims to educate Indian parents, agents and prospective international students on the uniqueness of being a student in Queensland and the opportunities that exist around setting up a start-up in Queensland,” Ms Willoughby said.

A selection panel will consider the applications based on the applicants’ ability to deliver on the key requirements of the project and set criteria, including social media impact, genuine innovation, creative design and the potential to be the next ‘big thing’.

The competition closes on Monday.

The state government will fund the cost of the visit of the selected innovators.
