An Indian shopkeeper in the UK fought off three robbers armed with hammers, using just cardboard boxes.
55-year-old Raj Sandhu was emptying the cash machine in his store in Warwickshire on Monday night when the robbers entered his store and one of them made a dash towards him with a hammer in his hand.
A CCTV camera in the store recorded the incident. In the video, Mr Sandhu is seen fighting off his attacker with the cardboard boxes full of cash retrieved from a cash machine in the store. Another robber then joined in and started attacking the Indian migrant.
As Mr Sandhu made his way to the alarm located behind the counter, the robbers ran out of the store with the cash that had spilt from the cardboard boxes on to the floor.
“It was gut instinct. I thought if I didn’t fight back, they would hit me over the head with it (the hammer),” Mr Sandhu told .
“I was trying to get behind the counter as that is where the panic button is, but the vibrations (of what happened) set it off anyway,” he said.
Mr Sandhu has run the store for the past 25 years, and said the robbers were actually eyeing a post office safe in the store which they couldn’t reach.
As the robbers stormed out of the store, Mr Sandhu gave them a chase but they got away in a car.
He said he was feeling fine but a bit shaken and had a swollen and bruised arm.
“We’ve been here 25 years and have had break-ins, but nothing like this,” said Sandhu.
“It’s shocking, but he was really brave. I’m really proud of him for being so strong during this difficult time,” his daughter-in-law Bobbi said.
