A Sikh man has been praised after using his turban to save the life of a drowning dog.
28-year-old Sarwan Singh spotted a crowd of onlookers looking at the stricken animal as he was driving past a canal in Punjab.
Mr Singh decided to act and used his turban to lower himself towards the canal and drag the dog out. Mr. Singh precariously held onto one end of his turban while reaching for the dog in the canal, risking his own life for the canine.
“I stopped my car and went over to check what was happening. I was shocked to see that there was a dog drowning but no was actually helping,” he said.
“The moment I started taking off my turban, people watching around were shocked. They thought I was disrespecting my faith but what was important at that point was to save the animal’s life," added Mr. Singh.
The turban is considered an essential part of their identity by the Sikhs and isn't taken off in Public. A Sikh international student in New Zealand last year was hailed as a hero after he removed his turban to help an accident victim.
