What Indian migrants feel about the chaos in Canberra

“NOT Dutton, he has been unfair to the migrants in the past and I have a feeling will continue with his anti-immigrants policy in the future,” said Harshdeep Singh Khullar, one of the many people contacted by SBS Punjabi about the leadership crisis in Canberra.

The prevailing pandemonium in the federal Parliament has triggered nostalgia among many Indian migrants who believe the chaos in Canberra is quite similar to the political upheaval which is quite “normal” back in India.

“Well, here in Australia people seem to be perturbed, but from where we come from, all this drama is a regular event,” Puneet Singh told SBS Punjabi when we asked him how he felt about the leadership crisis in the Liberal Party.

Australian federal politics has been in the grip of political turmoil this past week.

Malcolm Turnbull's position as Prime Minister of Australia remains precarious, former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton remains his biggest challenger, with Scott Morrison and Julie Bishop, too, jumping into the fray.

While the whole country is keeping a hawk’s eye on the flurry of events unfolding in Parliament, we went out to ask our audience what they think about the meltdown in Canberra.

“Anyone, but Peter Dutton.”

“NOT Dutton, he has been unfair to the migrants in the past and I have a feeling will continue with his anti-immigrant policy in the future,” said Harshdeep Singh Khullar.

“Hopefully not Peter Dutton, the rest we can still bear,” said Jagdeep Singh, while Deep Kaur said, “anyone who of these three, with a soft spot for migrants.”

Ravneet Singh Kang told SBS Punjabi that he would pick 'ScoMo' for the top job because “he has been loyal and has openly backed PM Turnbull. He's also a strong economist and has the ability to take Australia to new heights.”

But Shaina Sachdeva disagreed with Mr Kang’s opinion. She pointed out, that "we (migrants) must not forget that it was Mr Morrison who “stopped the boats” of the asylum seekers."  Ms Sachdeva who takes pride in her knowledge of Australia’s political affairs said she’d rather pick Ms Bishop as the next prime minister.

“Having served as deputy to Abbott and Turnbull, Ms Bishop is a more experienced politician,” added Ms Sachdeva.

“The political circus must end.”

“Australian politicians change their PM more often than I change my underwear,” wrote Amar Prem on our Facebook page.

And some just believe in trolling:

“Anyone of them but make sure they pass IELTS with 8 in each module,” commented Bir Bharti.

While another one of our audience members commented, “How about Sukhi (Sukhbir Singh Badal)? He is totally free these days. Let’s call him from Punjab and make him the Prime Minister,” said Karandeep Singh Grover.
