As India-Pakistan tension escalates, Australia issues advisory for residents planning to travel to India

Australia has asked its residents to "exercise a high degree of caution" while travelling to India. The official statement mentions the "threat of terrorism and, crime and the risk of civil unrest" as key reasons behind the travel advisory. While the advisory is issued for the entire country, the border areas of Punjab and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are considered to be at higher risk.


The statement comes shortly after the tension between two neighbouring nations escalated.

Unknown gunmen recently opened fire on local tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam. In response, India now claims to have targeted at least nine locations in Pakistan.

Australia has issued a citing the "current security situation between India and Pakistan" as a concern.

"Do not travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the India-Pakistan border or Manipur," the official statement from Smart Traveller Australia states.

It further adds, "Reconsider your need to travel to the Atari-Wagah border crossing, Chhattisgarh and the border areas of its neighbouring states, Nagaland, and some parts of Assam."
