Peter Russo and Sanja Kacar visited our Melbourne studio on Wednesday and we had a chat about the program they will prepare next Thursday.
Sanja is very well known as a poet to the Serbian public as she has published four books of poetry but she surprised many presenting herself as a painter for the first time last year.
"But I just must tell you something very funny. I found it funny. Just few days ago I went to the Winter Salon opening night, on Smith Street and I had three of my paintings and I was really surprised because somebody said that one of my paintings ... the person actually thought is the Picasso's painting Wiping Woman ... I was lost for words..." said Sanja in an interview to SBS Serbian.
"What I want to say is ... this is the new interaction with people and art, I mean painting is very different again then poetry and while poetry is asking for serious side of me somehow, with painting I feel like a little girl, very different. I don't know what will heppen with all this together but it is a lot of fun at the moment."

"We have done one previous joint show together at the Collingwood Gallery that showcased Sanja’s art and poetry in April of this year. Our next performance will be on the 13th July at Pause Bar in Carlisle Street Balaclava."
"I will play my song “Gypsy of War.” The song was inspired by an article in The Age from about 10 years ago that described the plight of the refugees arriving by boat. It is still relevant today."
Peter has been composing music and playing guitar since he was a child.
"I played at folk clubs and venues from when I was at school in the 70’s and since then. I have been working in the law for many years but now that my children are independent, I have started performing again. Many of my songs have social themes, themes of family and childhood and others. I have been performing together with poets and other musician this year."

I’m a gypsy of war
Can you hear my plea?
In the land where I come from
No one is free.
I am helpless, I am homeless
Drifting on the sea
Are you the welcome stranger
To give me sanctuary?
I’m a gypsy of war
Must I wander this earth
Forever cursed for my belief
Never to find comfort
To never find relief?
If you could step inside my shoes
And see the things I’ve seen
You’d dream the living nightmare
That is my living dream
I’m a gypsy of war
But my mother she lay dying
My father disappeared
My brother lies in prison
And my children in fear
And I stand in supplication
And then you turn away
Leaving me to mourn again
To die another day
I’m a gypsy of war
I’m enslaved here in a wilderness
Beneath a merciless blue sky
In a desert land
Far beyond the seeing eye
What crime have I committed
What can I have done?
To be treated like a criminal
And to face the setting sun
I’m a gypsy of war
For I was helpless
I was homeless
Drifting on the sea
Are you the welcome stranger…?
