Originally part of the never completed Commencement Column the stone has three stones naming Lord Thomas Denman, Governor General at the time of laying the stones, Andrew Fisher, the Prime Minister of the day, and King O'Malley who, as Minister for Home Affairs, was intimately involved in the selection of Canberra as the federal seat of government.
