Amnesty International is calling for a probe into an attempted prison uprising in Venezuela that was crushed by authorities, leading to dozens of deaths.
"The authorities' lethal response must be thoroughly investigated and analysed so that these international crimes do not go unpunished," said Erika Guevara-Rosas, the Americas director at the international rights organisation.
At least 47 people were killed after a group of inmates at Los Llanos Penitentiary Centre in Guanare in Portuguesa state tried to escape on Friday.
At least 75 people were injured, including the prison director, according to reports.
Venezuela has seen several bloody prison uprisings in recent months.
Many prisons are controlled by armed gangs.
According to an army report, the disruption started when inmates began destroying "the security fences around the perimeter" in a "massive escape attempt".
Parliamentary Deputy Maria Beatriz Martinez, who represents Portuguesa state where the prison is located, disputed that account, saying prisoners rioted because they did not have enough food.
More than 330 cases of coronavirus, including 10 deaths, have been recorded in Venezuela, but authorities say there have been no cases in the country's jails.
Opposition leader Juan Guaido has refuted Venezuela's official count, accusing the government of Socialist President Nicolas Maduro of "shamelessly lying."
