A mayor in the US state of Alabama has apologised after calling for the “killing out" of gay people who "lecture us on morals", along with transvestites and "baby killers", in a since-deleted Facebook post.
According to local , Carbon Hill mayor Mark Chambers posted on Facebook: “We live in a society where homosexuals lecture us on morals, transvestites lecture us on human biology, baby killers lecture us on human rights and socialists lecture us on economics”.
His friend then reportedly commented: "By giving the minority more rights than the majority. I hate to think of the country my grandkids will live in unless somehow we change and I think that will take a revolution.”
And Mr Chambers responded: “The only way to change it would be to kill the problem out. I know it’s bad to say but without killing them out there’s no way to fix it.”
The station said the mayor first defended his post, saying his words had been taken out of context and were meant to be private, but later apologised.
"Although I believe my comment was taken out of context and was not targeting the LGBTQ community, I know that it was wrong to say anyone should be kill [sic]," he reportedly posted on Facebook.
His account is now private.
Some took to Twitter to express their views over his comments.
The Human Rights Campaign group condemned the post as "horrifying, unsociable and unacceptable".
Mr Chambers has been mayor of the town of fewer than 2,000 people since 2014.
