The defence minister has admitted it was a difficult decision to go public about a tip-off that terrorists may target Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli.

The government continues to advise travellers to reconsider their need to travel to Ankara and Istanbul, but has added a specific warning about the potential terrorism threat.

Despite the government usually telling people to go about their lives, Marise Payne insisted it was important to make the information public.

"It's a difficult decision... but is important to do it," she told ABC radio on Friday.
