English pop star Sam Smith will perform at Mardi Gras in Sydney next month.

In a video posted to Twitter, the Grammy-award-winning artist said singing at the celebration of Australia's LGBTIQ+ community would be one of the "highlights of my career".

"Australia has meant so much to me as a queer person and I am going to be singing at Mardi Gras this year and I cannot wait to be with you all after such a challenging time and hopefully we can spread that love and celebrate and sing and dance."
Smith, who is considered one of the most influential LGBTIQ+ voices in the music industry, came out as non-binary last year.

In September, the 27-year-old asked fans to use the pronouns they/them when referring to them.

At the time, Smith wrote on Instagram about struggling with their gender for years.

"After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out."

While they weren't ready to speak at length about what it meant to be non-binary, they wanted to be "visible and open".

Smith joins other musicians Dua Lipa, Kesha and Brazilian drag star Pabllo Vittar on the line-up for Mardis Gras on 29 February.

The theme of this year's parade is "What Matters".

"We've come so far, and we know there's so much further to go together."
