Bonita Mabo family agree to state funeral

The family of indigenous education and human rights activist Bonita Mabo have accepted the Queensland government's offer of a state funeral.

Renowned indigenous human rights defender and South Sea islander activist Bonita Mabo will be farewelled at a state funeral in Queensland next month.

Dr Mabo, who was in her 70s, died earlier this week.

She was widely recognised for her devoted advocacy for indigenous education and push for the rights of indigenous Australians and Australian South Sea Islanders.

"This state funeral will be an opportunity for everyone in our community to pay tribute to Dr Mabo, reflecting on her outstanding life and legacy," Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said on Wednesday.

The funeral will be held in Townville in December and more details will be released in the coming days.

Dr Mabo died just days after being awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters from James Cook University in recognition of her work.

The widow of land rights campaigner Eddie Koiki Mabo, she spent 10 years on the Central Queensland Land Council and co-founded Australia's first indigenous community school, the Black Community School, in Townsville.
