Volunteer bush firefighters want a retired judge to lead an independent inquiry into a deadly West Australian blaze that all but wiped out the historic South West town of Yarloop.

WA Association of Volunteer Bushfire Brigades vice president Dave Gossage told AAP there had not been a thorough inquiry since the royal commission into the 1961 Dwellingup fires.

Former Australian Federal Police commissioner Mick Keelty examined two separate bushfires in 2011 that destroyed 71 homes in Kelmscott-Roleystone and 32 in the Margaret River region.

His reports triggered a restructure of WA's emergency services, including turning the former Fire and Emergency Services Authority into a department controlled by a commissioner.

But Mr Gossage says there is still too much red tape when it comes to tackling massive fires and the process needs more thorough examination after a series of devastating blazes in recent years.

He says bureaucrats should listen more to local bushfire brigades and everyone must have their say at an inquiry.

"We need a truly independent, clear and unbiased review," he said.

Emergency Services Minister Joe Francis has dismissed calls for a parliamentary inquiry but the state government is expected to release details of some form of review soon.

Two elderly men died in the lightning-sparked blaze, which also destroyed 181 properties, including 162 houses.
