Canberra Christmas lights smash world record

Canberran David Richards likes his Christmases to be incredibly bright - he's just set another world record for a lighting display in the city centre.

A Canberra lawyer has set a new world record for the most lights on an artificial Christmas tree - taking the title off a commercial theme park in Japan.

Father-of-three David Richards decorated a 22-metre tree in Canberra's city centre with almost 520,000 LED lights.
The project is a fundraiser for charity SIDS and Kids ACT which supported Mr Richards and his wife Janean when they lost their one-month-old baby in 2002.

The Canberra tree takes the record from Universal Studios Japan.

"For a little charity to come out of nowhere and beat the previous record is extraordinary," Mr Richards said in a statement.
"Canberra has taken the world record away from a major theme park in Japan."

In 2014, Mr Richards and the SIDS charity set a world record for the largest image made of LED lights and, in 2013, he reclaimed the record for the most Christmas lights on a residential house.
