Pregnant tattoo artist Kat Von D has copped criticism from social media users over comments she will raise her unborn child "without vaccinations".

Von D, who made her name on US reality show LA Ink, now owns one of the world's most successful cosmetic lines and has 6.7 million followers on Instagram.

She received swift backlash over a post announcing her pregnancy at the weekend, in which she shared her plans to have a "natural, drug-free home birth in water with a midwife and doula".

She added her intention was to raise "a vegan child, without vaccinations”.

Among those to criticise Von D was UK-based beauty blogger Caroline Hirons, who shared her story about her son's traumatic experience with measles that required modern medicine to save his life.

"At the time he was a 23 year old man, fitter than most, who played football for approx 4 hours a day. Mumps felled him. He lost over two stone in weight," she wrote.

"Without intensive medical intervention he would not be here. Now imagine he was a baby. Or someone with a compromised immune system.

"When I see people like @thekatvond using their platform to promote raising her unborn child ‘without vaccinations’, I want her and the drones of ill-advised people underneath...to see and know that this is the reality of ‘benign diseases’."

Von D's cosmetic line is stocked in stores around the world. The brand is owned by multinational conglomerate company Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH). The company has not commented on Von D's post.
