The RSPCA is urging Queenslanders not to buy pets as a surprise present this Christmas.
RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty said staff and volunteers would already be spending the festive season looking after hundreds of unwanted and abandoned domestic animals.
"All animals need permanent, happy homes where their owners have made a decision to commit to that animal for the term of its natural life," he said in a statement.
"If the children are not up to the responsibility then it's preferable to give them socks or jocks, rather than Sox or Jock."
Mr Beatty urged families who were looking to bring a pet into the family to consider adopting one.
"We suggest people visit an RSPCA shelter and make a lasting difference, not only for this Christmas but all through the year," he said.
