Former One Nation senator Fraser Anning has announced he is joining maverick Queensland MP Bob Katter's political party.

Senator Anning cut himself loose from Pauline Hanson's party to sit as an independent on the Senate crossbench in November.

He replaced Malcolm Roberts in the Senate after he was caught up in the dual citizenship saga.

AAP has confirmed Senator Anning will now represent the Katter's Australia Party in the Senate.

Mr Katter and Senator Anning have been friends for 40 years.

The pair have much in common, including owning cattle stations and having pictures of the late former Queensland premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen on their walls.

Katter's Australia Party picked up three Queensland seats at last year's state election.
