Federal Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam has announced he will be taking a leave of absence to treat depression and anxiety.
The West Australian politician made the announcement on Facebook on Friday afternoon, writing that “these are issues I’ve been dealing with for a while”.
“I will return to work as soon as I'm able to give the commitment the work demands,” Senator Ludlam wrote.
Shortly after the announcement, Greens Leader Richard Di Natale tweeted his support.
The ABC that Senator Ludlam has been granted a parliamentary pair until the end of the year, so his absence will not affect senate votes.
“I am fortunate to be getting the very best of care from my friends and family, and my health professionals,” the senator said.
Both close colleagues and senate rivals have issued statements of support.
