South Australia will boost support for Holden workers to move into shipbuilding ahead of an expected announcement of the winning bid to build Australia's next submarine fleet.

Premier Jay Weatherill will modify worker transition and diversification programs to make sure those involved in car manufacturing get the biggest possible slice of shipbuilding ahead of the closure of Holden's assembly plant next year.

Mr Turnbull is set to name the designer of the 12 new submarines and confirm where they will be built in Adelaide on Tuesday.
