The internet has gone wild for a Hong Kong policeman who saved a Pakistani man who was trying to jump from a crane.

Ifzal Zaffar, who has Pakistani heritage, joined the Hong Kong police less than a year ago under a program designed to get more ethnic minority people to join the police.

The 20-year-old officer shot to internet fame after he and other officers were called to the scene on Sunday morning to try and help the Pakistani man.

Constable Zaffar climbed up the crane after the man and spoke to him in Urdu and was able to talk him down.

The man was taken to hospital and Constable Zaffar, who can also speak fluent Cantonese, quickly became a sensation.
He told Hong Kong media the man felt comfortable talking to him because Constable Zaffar could speak his native language.

"I used the techniques we learned at the academy … I think he felt safer knowing that I could talk to him in his own language," he said.

Many people have commented on a Hong Kong Police Facebook video praising the young officer's actions.

"Excellent Cantonese...good character...friendly personality...high spirit...he's an [asset] to the Hong Kong police force," Richard Chin wrote.

"Welcome your joining the HK Police Force and you have already contributed and serving the HK people well [sic]," Winnie Wong wrote.

The Muslim Council of Hong Kong also commented, praising Constable Zaffar.

"Brilliant to see us (Muslims + ethnic miniorities) integrating into the local society in such a way, especially into the civil services," they wrote.

"Bravo to this young man and thank you to the HK police force for bringing him in and hope more such stories can be seen to show HK is indeed a multi-cultural city."

Constable Zaffar received a commendation for saving the man as well as praise from his commander Cheung Leung-yuk.

"Having officers like Zaffar benefits law enforcement work when there are fewer language barriers and cultural differences," he said.
