* BILL SHORTEN - Likely the next Labor prime minister, the opposition leader doesn't need anyone to rock the boat

* WAYNE SWAN - The new ALP national president will continue his push to combat income inequality

* SALLY MCMANUS - The ACTU national secretary has been leading the charge to "change the rules" on workplace laws, including industry-wide bargaining
