Meghan Markle has joined fiance Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace for the royal family's Christmas lunch.

The Queen traditionally hosts a festive lunch for her family before leaving for her private Sandringham estate, where she spends the holidays.

The prince and his fiancee will be married on May 19 at Windsor Castle's St George's Chapel, an event which will be one of the royal highlights of 2018.

It has already been confirmed that Markle will be part of the royal party at Sandringham for Christmas.

Her appearance at the Buckingham Palace lunch is another indication of how quickly she has been accepted into the monarchy ahead of the wedding.

Harry was photographed at the wheel of a Land Rover Discovery driving his fiancee through the gates of Buckingham Palace.

The couple looked relaxed as they passed waiting photographers. The prince was smartly dressed in a suit, shirt and tie and the former Suits actress wore a patterned outfit.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived with their two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, in the back seat, on either side of their Spanish nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo. William was driving.

Other guests driven through the palace gates were the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, who travelled in one car, while in another were Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and their daughter Lady Gabriella Windsor.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were also spotted arriving for the lunch by car as were the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra.
