Melbourne's Federation Square evacuated after gas leak

A gas leak has forced the evacuation of hundreds of people from Melbourne's Federation Square building.

Emergency services have evacuated Melbourne's Federation Square as a result of a gas leak in the basement.

The Melbourne Fire Brigade is urging people to avoid the area while an operation is underway.

Four fire engines and 16 firefighters are on the scene along with Victorian police officers.
In a the Melbourne Fire Brigade says a broken natural gas pipeline was the cause of the evacuation.

"A substantial amount of gas was released and required the whole complex be evacuated," the statement said.

"Victoria Police is on scene and assisted with the evacuation of approximately 200 people.

"MFB crews are conducting atmospheric monitoring to determine the lower explosive limits of gas, however the likelihood of explosion is minimal as all ignition sources have been eliminated."

SBS Hindi first reported the evacuation just after 11.30am on Friday morning.
Police allowed those evacuated back inside the building shortly after 1pm.
