Michelle Obama breaks silence over Melania Trump's controversial speech

The first lady says she has 'no sympathy' for Melania Trump, who was accused of plagiarising a speech delivered by Michelle Obama in 2008.

Melania Trump continues to face criticism for a speech she gave during the ceremony where her husband Donald was anointed as the Republican presidential nominee.

Mrs Trump faced a social media storm after she gave the  at July's Republican National Convention, which included lines identical to a speech given by US first lady Michelle Obama in 2008.

Now, more than two months later, Mrs Obama has offered her thoughts on the incident during an interview with US talkshow host Stephen Colbert.
Mrs Obama was asked whether she had any sympathy for the spouses of presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton who are currently the full swing of pre-election campaigning, to which she answered: "No, not really".

"No, because you have to be in it, and if you don't agree, you should've agreed before they ran," she said.

"The bottom line is, if I didn't agree with what Barack was saying, I would not support his run. So I stand there proudly and I hope they are too. So no sympathy."

Colbert then pressed Mrs Obama on her thoughts regarding Melania Trump's controversial speech.

"Yeah, that was tough," she said.

Her response drew applause from the crowd.
A staff writer for the Trump Organization took responsibility for the chaos caused by a speech given by Mr Trump that drew accusations of plagiarism.

The writer, Meredith McIver, that threw into sharp relief the efforts by the Trump campaign to deny there had been a problem with Mrs Trump's speech.

Mr Obama's light hearted interview with Colbert also saw her an , US President Barack Obama.
