Australia won't be getting a register that compares the salaries of highly-paid company bosses and the amount they pay the average worker.

Getting the balance right was up to company boards, Treasurer Scott Morrison told parliament on Monday as he acknowledged concerns about out-of-sync pay for CEOs.

"What's important is we do things in this country that can ensure we can grow real wages and support companies to increase what they're earning so they can pay their employees more," Mr Morrison said in answer to a question from independent MP Bob Katter.
