Julia Gillard has told a Chinese business forum that economic growth can increase the risk of military conflict and that North Korea's behaviour threatens the whole region. The Prime Minister had her first meeting with the new Chinese president.





APRIL 7 - BLOG: NEVER A DULL MOMENT - THE PRIVILEGE OF TRAVELING FOR WORK

It's always a privilege to travel for work.

It's easy to remember that when you're staying in very nice hotels which you would never otherwise be able to afford.

But you could almost hear all of us in the travelling media chanting a reminder to ourselves in the dark at 4.30 this morning.

We said goodbye to our luggage for two days (we're arriving in Shanghai at midnight tonight and then leaving again for Beijing early tomorrow afternoon so it's carry-on only until Monday night) as we piled onto a Chinese bus in Sanya on the southern tip of Hainan Island, to drive two-and-a half hours north to the site of the conference we are here to cover.



APRIL 5 - BLOG: UNDER CLOSE WATCH AS A JOURNALIST IN CHINA

Whenever we Australian representatives of the Fourth Estate come to China, there are always a few little signs that they're keeping an eye on us.

For starters, it's wise to assume the hotel rooms are bugged and that if we leave electronic equipment lying around, it soon will be too. We're advised to carry our laptops and tablets with us and not leave them unattended.

In some hotels, we are housed in rooms one under the other - presumably because that makes the cabling easier.



APRIL 5 - PRIME MINISTER GILLARD'S TRIP BEGINS

The biggest ever official delegation to China from Australia will begin here, on the island of Hainan.
