People across the world want more politicians like Jacinda Ardern, Tanya Plibersek says

Federal Labor MP Tanya Plibersek says people across the world would like to see more politicians like Jacinda Arden, following the .

The opposition's education spokeswoman, one of the most prominent women in Australian politics, told ABC's Insiders program on Sunday morning Ms Ardern was an "inspiring person and an inspiring leader".

"I think the whole world has been looking at Jacinda Ardern and saying, ‘I wish we had a bit more of that'," she said.

The New Zealand Labour Party, led by Ms Ardern, surged to a huge victory on Saturday night, with the centre-left party on track to win almost half of the vote - the biggest single-party haul in at least 50 years.

Under Ms Ardern, one of the youngest prime ministers in the world, New Zealand has escaped the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, recording just 25 deaths. 

“I cannot imagine a people I would feel more privileged to work on behalf of, to work alongside and to be prime minister for," she said at a campaign event on Saturday.

"Tonight’s result does give Labour a very strong and very clear mandate."
Ms Plibersek also congratulated ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, with Labor claiming a , and said there is "a lot in common" between the ACT and New Zealand.

Labor's expected victory in the ACT will notch up 23 years in office by the end of the coming term.
"The lessons are clear: govern well, give people a vision for the future, make sure that you're investing in the services that make life better, make sure that you've got a focus all the time on jobs, on full employment," Ms Plibersek said.

"And that positive vision for the future includes building things, making things, caring for people, good jobs with decent pay and conditions, investment in renewables to power our future, to bring down the cost of energy in our grid for our households and our businesses."
