Western Australia shouldn't expect much cash in next month's federal budget because it has plenty of Commonwealth commitments already including GST top-ups, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has indicated.
As Mr Morrison embarked on a four-day visit to the state after touring the empty but soon-to-reopen Christmas Island immigration detention centre on Wednesday, Premier Mark McGowan outlined his wishlist, asking for more money for the Metronet rail project and regional roads.
But on Thursday, Mr Morrison signalled those wishes won't be granted, saying his government had already gone "above and beyond" for WA.
"They haven't even been able yet to spend the money on Metronet that we've committed to," he told reporters.
"Too much money never seems to be enough sometimes with state premiers."
Mr McGowan said WA deserved the better GST deal because it had contributed more than $30 billion over the past decade that was allocated to the rest of the country.
"We've given a lot to the other states over the years - more than our share," he said.
The top up money would be spent on debt reduction while the Metronet funding would be spent as contracts were signed, he said.
The federal government still needed to support road and rail, Mr McGowan said, adding it should help pay for a proposed $75 million redevelopment of the WACA Ground.
"They supported the MCG, they supported sporting grounds in Sydney and Brisbane, they gave us nothing for Optus Stadium," Mr McGowan said.
"They can't just say they've done enough and wash their hands of the state."
Mr Morrison is expected to spend his visit to WA campaigning in at-risk Liberal-held seats - Pearce, Swan, Canning and Stirling - and also in Cowan, held by Labor's Anne Aly.
