Prime Minister Scott Morrison is more sensitive than people realise, but sometimes you need "someone tenacious" to get things done, his wife says.

Jenny Morrison has given her first solo interview since Mr Morrison was elevated to Prime Minister in a Liberal leadership coup in August.

A former immigration minister, Mr Morrison revealed last year he was on his knees in tears over the difficult border protection decision turn back asylum seeker boats.

It was true, Ms Morrison said when asked by Nine Honey in her interview released on Sunday.

"Scott is very, very - he's sensitive about issues," Ms Morrison said.

"I don't know whether people...I think they have one view of him but he never took any of those decisions lightly and it might seem like he's gung-ho but you need someone tenacious sometimes to hold the line."

Ms Morrison said while she always knew her husband of nearly 30 years had leadership potential, she was surprised by the sudden changes in August.

"I did not see it coming," she said.

Weeks after moving into Kirribilli House, the Morrisons met with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, who were "so lovely" and her new reality started to sink in.

But Ms Morrison said she is determined to keep life as normal as possible, still driving their two daughters to their same school and walking dog Buddy to fetch coffee.
