Question time in federal parliament

What we learned, heard and were amused by in Question Time on Tuesday.

Josh Frydenberg and Malcolm Turnbull

Despite a leadership challenge, the government wanted to talk energy during Question Time. (AAP)

WHAT WE LEARNED

* The parliament has confidence in the prime minister, because the government maintains a one-seat majority.

--

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT WANTED TO SPIN

The government is not distracted by the Liberal leadership spill and is getting on with delivering for Australians.

--

WHAT LABOR WANTED TO TALK ABOUT

The prime minister no longer has a mandate to govern.

WHAT THEY SAID

"Given that nearly half of his parliamentary colleagues, including seven of his ministers, have today expressed a lack of confidence in the prime minister, how can the prime minister claimed to have any mandate to govern this country?" - Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

"The mandate our government has came from the 2016 election. Remember that? We won and you lost." - Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

"It has the face of the member for Wentworth (Mr Turnbull), the policies of the member for Warringah (Tony Abbott), and it has the cold, shrivelled soul of the member for Dickson (Mr Dutton)." - Labor deputy leader Tanya Plibersek describes a "Frankenstein's monster" of a government.

"The worst subject you could fight an election on would be character." - Leader of the House Christopher Pyne takes aim at Shorten.
