Songs may boost dementia relationships

A Melbourne academic is researching what influence group song writing has on connections between people with dementia and their families.

A Melbourne researcher is investigating whether group song writing could improve relationships between people living with dementia and their family carers.

Dr Imogen Clark from the University of Melbourne says the process of writing songs together is expected to help families and couples living with dementia explore their abilities and challenges and may help them continue to have positive relationships.

The research is among 17 projects to benefit in 2018 from a share of more than $1 million in grants distributed by the Dementia Australia Research Foundation.
