Sports stars, philanthropists among 895 people to receive Australia Day honours

Almost 900 people have been recognised for their contribution to science, sport, the arts and the community in the Australia Day honours list.

Of the 895 recipients 67 per cent are men and 33 per cent women.

Here's a selection of some of the recipients. 

  • Mike Turtur: Former cyclist and coach who founded Australia's top bike race, the Tour Down Under.

  • Tracey Spicer: Journalist and prominent advocate for women who have been sexually harrassed in the workplace. 

  • Evonne Goolagong-Cawley: Former World No 1 tennis player, she's now co-patron of Reconciliation Australia, an Australian Sports Commission ambassador for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and a board member of the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

  • Graham Burke: Co-founded Village Roadshow, the owner of Village Cinemas and theme parks, and has served as CEO of the company for 25 years. 

  • Greg Hallam: Head of the Local Government Association of Queensland.

  • Meg Lees: Former leader of the Australian Democrats, Ms Lees played a crucial role in introducing the GST to Australia. 

  • Karen Glaetzer: Pioneering Motor Neurone Disease nurse who became the first officially recognised palliative care nurse practioner.

  • Noel Campbell: Former president of Australia's peak dairy body who played a key role in securing the industry's place in the free trade agreement with China in 2014. 

  • Brian Loughnane: Served as Liberal Party federal director for more than 12 years.

Trevor McDougall: Leading ocean climate scientist specialising in ocean temperature and salinity mixing.

  • John Gaden: Veteran of stage and screen, this is his second time on the Australia Day honours list.

  • Walter Mikac: Founded the children's charity Alannah and Madeline Foundation after his wife and two daughters were murdered in the Port Arthur massacre 21 years ago. 

  • Margaret Barry: Australian philanthropist who has been living in Bali for 27 years and started the Bali Children Foundation. 

  • Neville James Browning: Military history writer who has published eight books about soldiers personal stories. 

  • Lynne Bradshaw: Perth businesswoman and animal advocate, Ms Bradshaw has transformed the RSPCA WA since becoming president in 2004. 

  • Shane Gould: Triple Olympic Gold medallist who has dedicated her life to teaching the importance of swimming.

  • Geoffrey Robertson: Barrister, academic and author, known for his prominent human rights advocacy.
