Springsteen on Broadway headed to Netflix

Bruce Springsteen's acclaimed one-man Broadway show will be broadcast on Netflix on the date of his final performance at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

Put away your wallet - you won't have to pay hundreds of dollars to see Bruce Springsteen's Broadway show.

Netflix announced Wednesday that it will broadcast The Boss' one-man show around the world on December 15, his last performance.

Springsteen on Broadway has been extended three times. He had previously planned to end in February, then pushed it to June 30, then pushed that to December.

In the two-hour show, Springsteen performs more than a dozen songs and tells stories about growing up in New Jersey. Tickets for the show at the Walter Kerr Theatre have been reselling for more than $1000 (A$1350).

Springsteen won a special Tony Award last month for the show, which was not submitted for competition on theatre's biggest night.

"The purpose of the film is to bring this incredibly intimate show to Bruce's entire audience intact and complete," Springsteen's manager Jon Landau said.

"In addition to its many other virtues, Netflix has provided for a simultaneous worldwide release which is particularly important for our massive international audience. Ted Sarandos and the entire company's support has been a perfect match for Bruce's personal commitment to the filmed version of Springsteen on Broadway."

Having won several Grammys, as well as an Academy Award for the song Streets of Philadelphia in 1994, the special could see him join an elite crew of EGOTS - artists with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.

The 68-year-old will be credited as writer, director and producer of the Springsteen on Broadway film along with Landau and others.
