Tas to expand meningococcal vaccinations

Three cases of meningococcal in Tasmania, one that resulted in the death of a teenage girl, has prompted the state government to expand its vaccination program.

Tasmania will expand its meningococcal vaccination program after three cases of the disease in the past fortnight, including the death of a teenager.

A 16-year-old girl died on July 12, while a young man and three-month-old baby boy have since been taken to hospital in unrelated cases.

"Given heightened community concern the government will consider how the current program could be further improved," state Health Minister Michael Ferguson said on Tuesday in a statement.

Free vaccinations for common meningococcal strains A, C, W and Y are available for infants in Tasmania as part of a national program.

The state government offers free vaccinations to teenagers for the W strain.

It was confirmed earlier this week the teenage girl had contracted the W strain, while the 20-year-old man was struck down with the B strain.

Details of the expanded state program are expected next week.
