Telstra blames faulty device for outage

Telstra's seventh network outage since February was caused by a faulty device.

Telecom giant Telstra has blamed a faulty device for its seventh network outage since February, which hit businesses in Victoria including National Australia Bank and budget airline Jetstar.

"The fault was caused by a device in the network behaving in a way that wasn't expected and it impacted part of the enterprise IP network in Victoria," a Telstra spokesman said on Friday.

The latest outage affected about 20 per cent of business customers on Telstra's enterprise IP network on Thursday.

Telstra wouldn't disclose how many customers it has on the network in Victoria.

The problem was rectified on Thursday evening, and Telstra has apologised to all affected customers.

"The impact was mainly in Victoria, with potentially some limited flow on effect outside of Victoria depending on a customer's network configuration," the spokesman said.

"We will also discuss any claims for loss on a case by case basis with customers through our account teams."

Jetstar flights from Melbourne were disrupted due to problems with its check-in systems, while The Royal District Nursing Service said its services for clients in their homes were also affected.

The outage came just a day after Telstra committed a further $200 million to improving its network, in response to a string of outages that have damaged its reputation.

The latest investment is on top of the $50 million Telstra pledged in May.

Telstra claims it has the best communications network in Australia, and charges customers a premium for its services.
