United States President Barack Obama used his final State of the Union address, in the eighth year of his presidency, to raise the issues of climate change and unemployment.

But his final address also allowed him to insert some of his trademark humour without the pressure of another election weighing down on him.

His jokes, including an opening quip about being brief to allow presidential campaginers to return to the race in Iowa, inspired glee both in the halls of Congress and online.

Republican politicians did not take the speech so well, with leading nominee Donald Trump using Twitter to criticise the address.
