The world's leading space agencies are ready to work with a new Australian body, declaring the "door is open" to close co-operation.

The federal government has announced plans for a domestic space agency to capture a bigger share of the booming space industry, currently valued at about $420 billion annually.

It will focus offering leadership and direction to companies seeking to invest with a view to creating thousands of jobs.

NASA's acting administrator Robert Lightfoot said the move was an excellent opportunity to increase collaboration.

He said he was looking forward to seeing what areas Australia might focus on and how much the country wants to take on.

"That will be their challenge," he said.

Russian Federal Space Agency boss Igor Komarov said his country did not have the historical connections with Australia but an agency was a "good start"

The European Space Agency said an Australian equivalent would provide European nations and businesses with an easy access point.

"It means you have a voice internally within your country and at the same time you have a voice to the outer world," ESA director general Johann-Dietrich Woerner said.

"We are really happy to continue our strong co-operation with Australia which goes back to the 60s of last century.

"The door is open."
