Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he believes Australians are ready for the nation to have a clear economic plan, just hours after announcing Australia will go to the polls on May 18.
"We create jobs, bring the budget back into surplus for the first time in 12 years - fixing Labors budget mess we inherited all those years ago," he told SBS News in an exclusive interview.

"My point is simple: Our future, the road ahead for Australia, the economy you will live in, where you’ll work, where you will seek to go into retirement, save for your retirement, raise a family, earn what you need to get yourself by.
"All of this depends on the strength of our economy."

While the PM has made bold promises about fixing the Australian economy, Thursday's election declaration comes off the back of 51 consecutive Newspoll loses and three Prime Ministers in the past four years.
"It’s a simple choice when it comes to the Prime Minister going forward, we changed the rules in the Liberal Party last year and it’s the same as the Labor Party," Mr Morrison said, dismissing concerns about a revolving door of leaders.
"Australians know the election on May 18 is a very important decision in the making and I think there will be engaging very seriously with that decision."
