US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have hosted a Halloween reception at the White House welcoming local children, military families, Boy Scouts and various youth groups.

The White House was covered with spider webs, bats and large fuzzy black spiders dangling from the columns on Monday. An orange carpet replaced the red carpet and decorative pumpkins adorned the portico.

The first couple handed out treats and posed for photos with the children who were dressed up in Halloween costumes.

A large T-rex costume, a skeleton wearing a "Make America Great Again" sign and a minion were standout costumes.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders attended the gathering with her husband and three children.

Jeff Sessions was also in attendance.
