US President Donald Trump has mocked congresswoman Ilhan Omar in a speech before Jewish Republicans, hours after a Trump supporter was arrested for threatening to kill Ms Omar, .

"Oh, I forgot. She doesn’t like Israel, I forgot, I’m sorry. No, she doesn’t like Israel, does she?" the President told crowds to applause, referencing .

In response, Ms Omar tweeted a video of the speech with the comment: "My Lord, forgive my people for they do not know."

Earlier on Saturday, 55-year-old Patrick Carlineo was arrested and charged with threatening to kill the Democratic Representative from Minnesota, after he called one of her staff members and threatened to shoot Ms Omar in the head last month.

“Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a [expletive] terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her [expletive] skull," Carlineo reportedly said.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, the US Department of Justice said.

Carlineo sounded angry during the phone call but also spelt his name for the staff member and provided contact details, according to an affidavit by an FBI special agent.

Interviewed at his home by investigators, Carlineo “stated that he was a patriot, that he loves the President, and that he hates radical Muslims in our government,” the affidavit said.

Carlineo made an initial court appearance on Saturday and is being held pending a detention hearing on April 10.

In the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks last month, that left 50 people dead, Ms Omar said Mr Trump's comments towards Muslims had inspired the attack.

"The reason I think that many of us knew that this was going to get worse is that we finally had a leader in the White House who publicly says Islam hates us, who fuels hate against Muslims, who thinks it is OK to speak about a faith and a whole community in a way that is dehumanizing, vilifying," she said.
