US President Donald Trump once joked that his Vice President Mike Pence wanted to "hang" gay people, the New Yorker magazine reports.

The unverified claim is made in an alleged recount of a meeting between the pair and a legal scholar.

According to the unnamed sources, Mr Trump was mocking the religiosity of Mr Pence, who is a firm evangelical Christian.

The magazine claims that when the conversation turned to gay rights, Mr Trump joked, "Don’t ask that guy—he wants to hang them all!"

Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Mr Trump's former political rival Hillary Clinton, referred to the allegation in a tweet. The tweet she linked to has since been deleted.
Mr Trump and Mr Pence have not commented on the report.
