Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has congratulated Malcolm Turnbull on his election as leader and pledged to deepen relations between the two countries.
Mr Abe and Mr Turnbull met on Saturday in the Turkish resort city of Antalya ahead of the G20 summit which starts on Sunday.
"I personally put a tremendous amount of importance in our relationship between Japan and Australia," the Japanese prime minister said.
"I would like to create new depths to further enhance this relationship."
Mr Turnbull said Australia and Japan shared common values and interests.
"We believe, as I know you do, that a strong strategic and economic relationship between our two countries is vitally important for the prosperity and the security of our region," Mr Turnbull said.
